POL 450: Politics of Authoritarian Rule in Myanmar

Course Description

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of
authoritarian rule in Myanmar and its interaction with society, the
economy, and political institutions. It introduces key concepts linking
military power, governance structures, and state–society relations, and
examines their application to contemporary political challenges. Students will learn how political, social, and economic perspectives can be used to analyze the foundations of authoritarian rule, the mechanisms of control and compliance, and the role of elites and institutions in sustaining the regime. The course also explores resistance and education, democratic actors, and the role of civil society in challenging authoritarian governance, while evaluating the influence of regional and international actors on Myanmar’s political trajectory.
